Souper-Tasting Food Event and Pop-Up Occupy Increased Our Visibility in the Neighborhood

NEK 99% hosted two events at The 99 Gallery and Center this month. Neighbors dropped by for the tasting event and left with kits including fresh produce from local farms and organic brown rice from Newport Natural Foods and all the other ingredients to make the dish they tasted, allowing us to provide dinner for about 30 people. The Pop-Up Occupy was hosted by Occupy Central Vermont at The 99. There was great free food and household items and some interesting workshop discussions.

We will be talking about Open Source Software. I will
demonstrate a linux installation on a virtual machine so people can see
how it is done. If you have a computer YOU want linux installed on -
please bring it we may be able to do an install for you if the
hardware is compatible.

I will show you a number of Open Source programs and discuss the
philosophy behind Open Source software - why it is free and what
freedoms does Open Source give you that proprietary software does not.

TWO NEW EVENTS AT THE 99

After a successful community picnic attended by over 40 guests from the neighborhood last Saturday, we're gearing up for two new events at The 99. The first starts July 30 at 7 PM at the center, and will be an informal "crowd sourced" course where we'll be learning how to use the internet to learn---plus lots of interesting information about internet privacy and security. The class will continue once or twice a week depending people's preferences and ease of picking up the material. Students will work in pairs either on their own laptops or one of the computers available at the center.  Watch this blog for current topics. We'll start July 30th learning what the internet is and all about open source software. Open source software is free, and so is this class!

Then on Sunday, August 4 at 2 PM, there will be an opening reception for an exhibit of a small sampling the gallery's collection of  paintings by Donald Peel, the gallery proprietor's father and a Seattle artist who was best known for his oil paintings and sculpture in the 50's and '60's. After a long period of depression, Peel, in his seventh and eighth decades of life, painted nearly a hundred large acrylic paintings on wood panel. Due to the artist's advancing illness, most of these paintings have never been exhibited.
